Tonsillectomy Blog Day 1
DAY 1:
I woke up around 7am very anxious to get this surgery over with. I am 34 years old and was dreading the surgery as I have had many people tell me it was the worst pain they ever felt. I was having my uvula and tonsils removed. Also, the doctor wanted to straighten out my septum while I was under. I was having the surgery to open up the breathing passage alleviate snoring, hopefully assist in curing my sleep apnea in a long term effort to reduce my weight and cure my sleep apnea altogether. I have also always struggled breathing during cardio, so I was hoping it would help out with that as well. I attempted the APAP machine prior to the surgery for about 6 months. But, it was very uncomfortable and I struggled to sleep with it on. I actually felt more tired from wearing it.
I have been prepping for this surgery slowly over the past two weeks. I bought many of the items I needed on Amazon and at the supermarket. I purchased a humidifier which turned out to be the best thing I did. I also got a little caddy to carry my meds around the house with me when I switched rooms. The doctor informed me to get a saline nasal spray and Tylenol as I was not allowed to take aspirin while recovering. I also bought a thermometer to monitor my temperature post op.
I was preparing for a liquid diet for two weeks with some solid foods included. My main goal was to ensure I was getting enough protein and vitamins to aid in healing. After some research I decided to buy CNP Pro Meal Replacement (Strawberry Flavored) as 3 scoops contained 42 grams of protein and about half of my daily vitamins. I am planning on drinking two of those each day. I also bought Finish Line BCAAs (Rainbow Sherbet) to assist in healing, and plan on drinking one of those per day.
Beyond that I bought G2 Gatorade and tiny ice cube trays to freeze the gatorade. I plan on using this as my ice chips to keep my electrolyte levels solid and have some flavor to the ice chips. Additionally, I bought snack packs pudding and jello, egg noodles, mac and cheese, ramen noodles, eggs, instant oatmeal, fruit popsicles, apple sauce and instant mashed potatoes. I also planned on trying fish as it is soft and provides a lot of protein; but, I am going to wait to buy that fresher when I feel I can swallow it.
Anyway, I had the surgery at noon. I was out of it for a little bit after from the anesthesia and in a lot of pain. However, I had no naseua. The nurse iced my neck and gave me some applesauce to eat along with some Hycet around 2:45. I was out of the hospital and home around 4. Much quicker procedure than I was expecting. However, I was in a lot of pain after, so I took some additional Hycet around 4:30 (10ml) and passed out until around 9. I have found that cold water was too much for me to handle and caused too much pain. I had to drink room temperature water on day 1.
When I woke up I was feeling a little better, not much. I took about 10 more ML of Hycet and attempted to drink a protein shake. The protein made my mucus a little thick, so I only had half of it. I then had a Jello to get some calories in my system.
Throughout the night I woke up about every hour to pee as I had drank about 100 ounces of water between the time I left the hospital and throughout the night. Every time I woke up I made sure to have more water and take my Hycet and Tylenol at the prescribed times. I also had to change the dressing under my nose as I was slightly dripping blood through the night onto it. I feel the best thing I have done is run the humidifier on high throughout the night to keep my mouth moist while I sleep.
I will get back to you tomorrow. Hoping this blog helps kill some time while recovering.
