Tonsillectomy Blog Day 4

Today was a rough one. I woke up in a lot of pain after skipping my late night pain killer dose last night to see if I can get by without it. I woke up around 4:30 am and started to alleviate the pain with the Hycet and icing my neck. I also finished up my steroids because of the misreading of the label.

However, none of this was the worst part of my morning. About 15 minutes later the phone rang. My mother was on the other end telling us that we needed to come by her immediately. Upon hearing this I instantly knew my father had lost his bout with cancer. I struggled most of the morning to try and not cry as it was very painful both emotionally and physically.

In seeing my family mourning my father's death I decided the best thing for me to do was try and be the rock and stay calm. I decided I was going to take the lead in helping everyone else through and setting up the arrangements as my mother and sibling, understandably, were in no shape to take on this task. I was so lost and had no idea what to do, but figured it out as I went.

The first thing I ate was a Finish Line BCAA shake as that was quick and easy, even though there aren't any calories in it, it did a lot. I then contacted the funeral home. After a waiting some time they came and took my father's body out of the apartment and we decided we would all go get cleaned up and return in an hour to move forward with planning this ordeal. On the way home it was just easier and faster to grab McDonald's. I tried a sausage, egg, and cheese McGriddle as I know they are typically very soft. I was able to chew and swallow it fairly easily as long as I took it in pieces and not as a whole sandwich. I continued to take the Hycet as I was doing a lot of talking to everyone to console and set up the arrangements.

Most of the day beyond this was the same. After showering I made a couple of Protein Shakes to make sure I had some food throughout the day. This helped a lot. I tried to stomach a small slice of pizza about midday but struggled with it even though the crust was soft.

Much of the day was a blur, but I kept myself busy setting up the arrangements and talking with family and friends. In order to stay on topic about the tonsillectomy I think the talking actually helped. When I got home later that night the scarring appeared to have gone down quite a bit. At this point I tried to eat some wonton soup and cutting up the noodles very small it went down very smoothly. It also helped that the soup itself was not loaded with sodium as wonton sometimes is.

Anyway, I still need to contact the doctor about represcribing the steroids and potentially getting more Hycet as I probably did take more today than I should have. It was just one of my coping mechanisms for both physical and mental anguish. One of my larger concerns that I will discuss with the doctor tomorrow though is also that I have not had a bowel movement since the surgery. I know this is from the pain killers, and I am not in pain or anything. However, I would like to prevent any future pain.

So far the diet I planned has worked out very well. In regards to the pain levels I read about some people having, I feel I have had it easier than most. That being said, I am also greatly distracted at this point.
